Cooking

The Cooking skill is used to create delicious feasts, fulfilling meals and mouth-watering snacks. The Cooking skill can be used either to prepare a meal to be immediately consumed or to prepare food or drink items for later consumption, such as bottled wine or cheese.

To cook a meal one needs the following:

  • Proficiency with Cooking Utensils
  • A set of Artisan’s Tools (Cooking Utensils)
  • A minimum of two culinary ingredients

Depending on the complexity of the meal the DM may call for additional requirements such as

  • Heating or refrigerating equipment
  • An assistant
  • A fully equipped kitchen

To create a meal the Gourmand nominates two or more ingredients, designating one ingredient as the base. Any additional ingredients act as modifiers, possibly conferring additional effects or enhancing the base effect. The Gourmand also decides whether the meal is to be consumed immediately or whether it can be preserved for a different occasion.

The skill modifier for a Cooking check is Wisdom Modifier + Proficiency Bonus. So, if you have a Wisdom of 16 (ability modifier 3) and a Proficiency Modifier of +2 you would add (3 + 2 = +5) to your d20 roll. Do note that for exceptional meals the DM might require additional checks. A check for a meal to be immediately consumed may be sized for one to six persons if the resources are available. A check for a foodstuff to be preserved is sized for one person in all cases.

Each Uncommon ingredient increases the DC by +1. Each Rare ingredient increases the DC by +2. Each Exotic ingredient increases the DC by +4.

The base DC for a Cooking check is 10.

An example of the process for cooking a meal is as follows.

Ginny the Druid has quite the cart of foodstuffs. As she settles down for the night, her appetite takes over and she decides to cook an extravagant meal for the adventuring party she is travelling with. She takes some cockatrice meat from some unfortunate fowl the party encountered previously. Using some spare bread and seasoning, she attempts to create a bunch of cockatrice meat sandwiches. For ingredients Ginny decides to fill both ingredient slots with Cockatrice Meat.

Because the recipe consists of two common ingredients the DC for the Cooking check is set at 10. Ginny has a Wisdom of 16 and thus adds her Wisdom ability modifier of +3. She has proficiency with Cooking Utensils, and thus she may add her Proficiency modifier for an additional +2. She rolls a 5 on a d20, and adds the +3 and +2 as previously mentioned.

Ginny made some cockatrice sandwiches!
